Our Team
At Woodhouse, we have a qualified team who have a wide range of knowledge and expertise in the care and development of pre-school aged children. They regularly access relevant training to ensure their knowledge and understanding of child development remains current and up to date.
Each child has a designated key worker who works closely with the children and their family, however as a small team, it is our aspiration that all our staff know every child and have the knowledge to meet the needs of all our children and families.
We provide a happy, safe, secure and nurturing environment where every child and their families are welcomed, respected and feel like they belong.
Welcome to Woodhouse Pre-School!
Where the magic happens!
Woodhouse Pre-school is situated within Ilsington C of E Primary School, in the friendly village of Ilsington, on the edge of Dartmoor
Our beautiful, purpose-built EYFS unit provides our children with a spacious, light and airy setting where we are able to provide continuous access to outside learning spaces in all weathers. We also benefit from access to the school’s outdoor facilities including the playground, large field and pond area.
Transition flows smoothly and naturally between pre-school and the reception class as we work as a blended EYFS unit, with children mixing across the setting.
In Woodhouse, we use the Bug Club scheme to gently introduce the children to Phase 1 phonics, which supports the children’s ability to discriminate between different types of sounds, develop an understanding of rhyme, rhythm and alliteration and exposes children to early segmenting and blending. These activities are all completed in fun and playful ways, which in turn provides a solid platform from which the children can begin their formal phonics learning when they transition into reception.
Older children from the primary classes spend time with our Woodhouse children, sharing books and activities and further supporting a smooth transition into the primary setting. We also enjoy being part of whole school events, including sports day, trips and performances. Each week the whole EYFS unit come together to engage in a session of Outdoor learning on the school field.
Funding
We have funded and non-funded spaces available for children from the age of 2.
All children aged 3 and 4 are eligible for 15 hours funding from the full term after their third birthday and some will be entitled to the additional working entitlement funding, which extends the universal 15 hours to 30.
In addition, some children are entitled to working entitlement funding from 9 months (please be aware that the youngest we can take children at Woodhouse is from their second birthday).

What we do
We plan a wide range of different activities and topics for each term and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework. The emphasis is on learning through exploration and play and following the children’s individual interests to maximise every learning opportunity.
Your child will be given the opportunity to experience climbing and sliding, music making, food tasting, painting, drawing, reading, storytelling, bug hunting, pond dipping, dancing, games, sand and water play, baking, dressing up, craft, junk modelling, building and construction, role-play and exploring the local area including our Outdoor Learning woodlands!
Parents / Carers
We recognise that parents and carers are our children’s primary educators and therefore it is incredibly important that we work together to achieve positive outcomes and ensure that the children are confident, happy and secure within the setting, at home and the local community.
We welcome you and your child to join us for a taster session at any time to come along and see what we get up to.
